About Me

¡Bienvenidos! Who am I?

Welcome to my blog. I am Matt. Matthew. Mateo. You've found yourself in a brand new world of my musing, storytelling, and exploring. Here I will write and document what it is, as I finish up my DO and MPH at Touro University California (TU). And after that, I will embark upon a career as a community-engaged physician.

You are in the right place if you:
  • Care about human rights and/or the structural determinants of health.
  • Are skeptical or optimistic about our ability to do anything to solve problems like racism, sexism, economic inequality, and/or xenophobia.
  • Have interests in understanding how Public Health can inform the field of ___________.
  • Would like to help cultivate systems, dialogue, and art as vehicles to improve the health of all people.

Compassion is Sustainable!

I grew up in the city of San Francisco
along the central coast of California
in the United States of America.

And I believe in Human Rights for all people!

It is difficult to understand why so many must suffer as I write this. There are countless human rights violations happening right now, after a history of many since the concept was ratified On December 10, 1948. On this day in 2018, there are over 50,000 people without homes in Los Angeles County. Children have been separated from their families after harsh immigration policies implemented by the 45th president of the United States. Yemen continues to undergo what is quite possibly the worst outbreak of Cholera in human history. And yet, humans can work together to solve problems. I know this. In 2004, when I was in 7th grade, I wrote a letter to the president explaining that gay marriage should be legal in a country like the United States which claims to be a land of freedom. 11 years later, as I drove to school in 2015, I heard that SCOTUS  ruled in favor of legalizing gay marriage in the case of Obergefell v Hodges. Change is more than possible, it is likely, and we can accomplish a lot by working together.

Thank you for reading.
